Bat Emergence Survey

Bat Emergence Surveys are required when evidence of bats has been found and/or a certain structure or tree has previously been assessed to have bat roost potential following a Preliminary Roost Assessment

Emergence Surveys can only be undertaken between May and September in suitable weather conditions. Structures or trees are monitored by licensed bat surveyor/s using bat detectors, cameras and night vision equipment to confirm likely absence and/or locate and characterise any active bat roosts within buildings and trees.

The minimum number of emergence surveys undertaken is dictated by the potential and/or presence of bat roosts ranging from Low Potential (x1 Survey), Moderate Potential (x2 Surveys) to High Potential (x3 Surveys). If no evidence of bats is recorded using the structure or tree during the bat surveys, then a likely absence of bats is assumed and no mitigation of further survey work is required. Where bats are recorded roosting, at least 3 emergence surveys are undertaken to characterise the roost and provide data for a mitigation licence if required.
